Yigit defends European title against Hughes on December 2 in Leicester

Anthony ‘Can You Dig It?’ Yigit (20-0-1, 7 KOs) defends his European Super Lightweight Championship against British boxer Joe Hughes (15-2-1, 6 KOs) on December 2 at the Leicester Arena in Leicester, United Kingdom.

The Swedish star returns following a historic fight against Spanish southpaw Sandor Martin on September 30 at the Solnahallen in Stockholm, which was the first time the European title had been contested on Swedish soil since 1966.

Yigit now returns to England, where he claimed the European strap with a unanimous points win over Lenny Daws, to make a second defence against the all-action former English Champion and British title challenger Joe Hughes.

“It was a great experience to defend my European title at home in Stockholm and now I’m looking forward to making a second successful defence,” said Yigit. “I won the belt in England so I’ve got no problem coming back here to defend it.

“I know a bit about my opponent Joe Hughes. I’ve watched his fights with Tyrone Nurse and Jack Catterall. I’ve got huge respect for British fighters because they’re all tough and I know it’s not going to be an easy fight. I will need to come with my A game and be at my best to win.”

The challenger Hughes says he is looking forward to his chance to take Yigit’s European crown in a fight that is expected to have a television audience of over 1 million people in the UK on terrestrial television network Channel 5.

“I’m really excited to be fighting on such a big platform,” said Hughes. “I want to box my best in front of that many people. I’ve seen Anthony Yigit box before. I saw him box Lenny Daws, which was a good win for him. He is a great champion and the type of fighter you want to win a title from.”

Yigit says fans should expect an entertaining contest on December 2. “It’s going to be an explosive fight,” he adds. “I know Joe Hughes likes to come forward. He doesn’t back away from a fight and I like to please the crowd as well.”

Former World Champion and Hall of Fame boxer Barry McGuigan, who promotes the show in Leicester, was full of praise for the Swedish champion at today's press conference.

“This is a great main event,” said McGuigan. “Anthony Yigit is a tremendously exciting and aggressive boxer. I’m looking forward to a fantastic fight.”

Yigit’s promoter Nisse Sauerland is predicting a tough test for the defending champion but is confident his fighter has the beating of his British opponent.

“Anthony will have learnt a lot from his last fight with Sandor Martin,” said Sauerland. “That was a tough twelve round test against a strong opponent. He faces another dangerous opponent, this time away from home. Anthony is a throw back fighter. He is happy to fight anyone, anywhere, and we're confident he will be bringing the belt back home to Sweden.”
