Patrick and Micki Nielsen to train in Copenhagen, former world champ Joey Gamache added to coaching team

WBA Intercontinental Middleweight Champion Patrick Nielsen (18-0, 8 KOs) and his brother Micki (7-0, 6 KOs) will work out in their hometown Copenhagen in the future.

The unbeaten youngsters will train at Team Sauerland´s new gym, which will officially be opened in June. Former world champion and renowned US coach Joey Gamache will be coaching them. “We are thrilled to welcome Joey to our team,” promoter Nisse Sauerland said. “He is an excellent coach who knows the game inside out. He is from a boxing family and has boxing in his blood. The Nielsens will benefit hugely from having such a renowned coach in their hometown. They have always been keen to spend more time in Denmark. Joey has moved to Copenhagen and will work with them on a daily basis. The brutal sparring will still be done in Berlin, with Joey and Karsten Roewer cooperating closely to prepare them for the next Nordic Fight Night in Aarhus. Both will be in the corner at NRGi Arena.”

Gamache won the WBA Super-Featherweight Title in 1991 and added the WBA Lightweight Title one year later. He retired in 2000 with a record of 55 wins, 4 losses and 38 KOs. The 46-year-old, who has worked alongside Emmanuel Steward at the famous Kronk Gym in Detroit, has trained fighters all over the world. “It´s great to be in Copenhagen and work with the Nielsen brothers,” Gamache said. “They are great prospects with tremendous talents. Patrick is the number 4 in the world already and he keeps beating strong guys to defend his title, while Micki keeps knocking people out. I see everything there and really believe in their talent. They have a great team around them, with Simon Lundt-Hansen as manager and Nisse Sauerland as promoter. There are great things ahead for them.”

Patrick Nielsen is thrilled about the cooperation. “I really like Joey, he is a great coach and I can learn a lot from him. It´s good to spend more time in Denmark and to have a fully equipped gym in Copenhagen on our doorstep along with a renowned American coach. This will make me even stronger!”

Nielsen will return to the ring on June 15 at the Nordic Fight Night in Aarhus. Tickets are available at More details about the grand opening of the Team Sauerland gym will be announced in due time.
