Masternak returns in Kiel, bolstered by new coach Wegner

Mateusz Masternak (32-2, 23 KOs) begins his journey back to the top of the cruiserweight division when he takes on Gabor Halasz (35-15, 15 KOs) on September 27 in Kiel, Germany. ‘The Master’ returns following his interim World title points defeat to Youri Kalenga, bolstered by the new man in his corner, world renowned German coach Ulli Wegner.

‘’I’m very happy to have someone with such a wealth of experience in my corner,’’ said the 27 year-old from Wroclaw, Poland. ‘’This was unfortunately missing in my last fight. Otherwise I would already be world champion.’’

Wegner, who has already guided the likes of Arthur Abraham, Marco Huck and Sven Ottke to world glory, has been impressed by what he has seen from his latest protégé.

‘’Mateusz is always first in the gym and last to leave,’’ said the 72 year-old. ‘’He has an incredibly professional approach to boxing and has already had an excellent education in the sport. If Mateusz can technically and tactically implement what I tell him, we will soon have a new champion in the Max-Schmeling Gym.’’
